Five Simple Steps to Improve Your Cyber Posture

There are several cybersecurity frameworks out there like CMMC and NIST that aim to protect businesses. However, implementation of these frameworks can take some time, and as a result, you are left exposed until they are in place. In the meantime, there are five things you can do to protect your business while you are getting your cybersecurity framework set up.

1.      Back-Up and Protect Your Data

The first thing businesses should do to protect themselves from a security breach is back up their data. In the event of a cybersecurity attack, your data can be stolen and deleted from your servers. It is one thing to deal with stolen data; it is another to have it completely deleted from your servers. You can avoid that situation altogether by regularly backing up your data on drives separate from your regular network.

2.      Identify All Equipment

You must identify all laptops, smartphones, tablets, and other devices that access your company’s private network. Most cybersecurity breaches are a result of a compromised device. By identifying all your company’s equipment, you will better identify the source of the breach and plan your response more effectively.

3.      Train Your Employees

Cybersecurity breaches usually come from negligence on the part of individuals. As a result, it is a solid idea to train your employees to identify phishing attempts and other unusual activities.

4.      Prepare an Action Plan

It is always a good idea to have a plan of attack should the worst arise. What will you do if there is a security breach and sensitive information is stolen? How will you proceed? Your action plan should outline how you notify at-risk employees and customers. Additionally, it should indicate how you will investigate the attack and how you will report the attack to law enforcement.

5.      Test Your Plan

An action plan is great, but it will mean nothing if it has not been tested. Make sure to test your action plan regularly to identify the weak points and adjust accordingly. No plan is foolproof, but you can give it the best chance of being successful on the day of a breach by testing regularly.

What Can GSec Do to Help?

Those are just a few things that you can do to get yourself started on the path to increased cybersecurity. It can be difficult to get started without help, but we can help on that front. GSec will help you find the right solutions and plans for your business based on its size and budget. Additionally, we will help you prepare documentation for things like disaster recovery and test plans.
