NIST Publishes Review of Digital Forensic Methods

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recently filed a report which examines the foundations of digital evidence examination. Additionally, it provides recommendations as to how the field can advance.

Release and Public Feedback

The report was released on May 9th and will remain open to public feedback for 60 days until July 11th, 2022. People in the industry can read the document to review the methods used by forensic experts to analyze evidence from computers, phones, and other electronic devices.

The Review

This review aims to document and evaluate the scientific basis for various forensic methods and fills the need identified by the National Academy of Sciences in 2009.

To conduct the review, experts examined peer-reviewed literature and documentation from software developers. They tested results on forensic tools and reviewed best practice documents.

Additionally, the report discussed the challenges the digital forensic experts face, including the rapid pace of technological change. The rapid advancement of technology makes it more difficult for digital forensic experts to examine security methods and protocols.

Recommendations in the Report

The main takeaway from the report is that digital forensic experts recommend better methods for information sharing among experts and a more structured approach to testing forensic tools. It is believed that these changes would lead to an increase in efficiency and reduce duplication of effort across labs.
